Route via M1 and Journey Time
Most of the time, your driver takes the A217 south to junction 8 of the M25, then heads anticlockwise round the western side of London. At junction 21 you join the M1 north, then leave at junction 10 for the airport road.
On a quiet road this typically takes around 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes. On a weekday morning it can take longer.
Distance and Traffic Hotspots
The usual route is typically 50 to 60 miles. The tricky stretches are well known. The M25 between junctions 10 and 16 is busy at peak times as it passes the A3, M3, M4 and M40 junctions. The section near the airport slip roads gets heavy around holidays too.
Closer to home, the A217 through Banstead and Burgh Heath can back up at school times. If the M25 is in a bad way, an alternative goes north through London towards the M1 at Staples Corner. The driver checks before setting off and chooses the better road.
One more local tip. If you are flying on a bank holiday Friday, book an earlier pickup than usual. The M25 and M1 are always busier as people head off for long weekends, and an extra 20 minutes in hand takes the pressure off.
